LITVIDS BOOK TRAILER COMPETITION 2.015

What is LitVids & what is in it for me?

LitVids, short for Literature Video, is a book trailer that promotes a story from literature in a video form. A book trailer is like a movie trailer but instead of advertising a movie you will be advertising a book. Essentially it is a chance to advertise your favourite book in a way that will encourage others to read it.

The LitVids competition, created and run through the Mackay Regional Libraries provides an opportunity to learn story boarding and the art of book trailers from Australian author Tristan Bancks as well as technical skills through a digital workshop with Tristan. Winners of the competition are announced at the Whitsunday Voices Festival.

Competition age categories
12 to 14 years old
15 to 17 years old
18 and up (no limit)

Prizes

Best Book Trailer $250- The overall winner in each age category for a book trailer which encapsulates the essence of the book, demonstrates creativity in its design and most inspires the viewer to read the book.

Encouragement Award $100- Judges will present the Encouragement Award to an entrant from each age category who shows great promise.

Checklist for submitting your entry
þ Complete all details on the entry submission form;
þ Complete photo permission forms for all actors
in your trailer, if relevant;
þ Hand forms and USB in to your nearest CHRC Library
branch by or before the deadline, June 27th;

Important, please remember!
Your finished product must be either a .wmv, mpeg4 or .avi file

Your entry will be uploaded to Vimeo by Wednesday, July 8th. Book trailer competition entries will be searchable on Vimeo, so while you are there why not check out some previous enteries. www.vimeo.com/litvids.

Ensure you keep a copy for yourself as entries cannot be returned.

Judging criteria

Your book trailer should make viewers rush to read the book and be created using copyright free images, video, animation, music and words.

Your book trailer will be judged in the following criteria:

Ÿ Captures the key essence of the book- Avoiud giving away the whole story!

Ÿ Encourages others to read the book- Be persuasive

Ÿ Original concept- No copyright material

Ÿ Technical expertise- It is less about what you can do and more about how you have used your technical knowledge

Frequently asked questions

Will my book trailer be screened?

All enteries will be uploaded to Vimeo by Wednesday,
July 8th 2015. Short-listed entries will be screened in all
Mackay Regional Libraries and in the CHRC Emerald Library
from Wednesday, July 8th 2015.

Can I enter more than one book trailer?

Yes, you can create and enter more than one book trailer-
just remember to submit a separate entry form for each
book trailer you create.

What is the deadline for LitVids entries?

The deadline for LitVids entries is Saturday, June 27th 2015.

How long can my entry be?

The ideal book trailer length is 30seconds- 60 seconds,
but we will accept any trailer under 90 seconds including
titles and credits. Please keep it short!

Can I use any music, image or sound I want?

Unfortunately no- Probably every song or piece of music that
you know is under some kind of copyright and it is the same with
most images. What does this mean? It means that someone owns
the piece of music or image and you cannot use them legally without
asking permission from that person or company. Check out some free copyright
resources to use in your trailer (refer to list included in this blog).

What are the entries judged on?

Your book trailer will be judged on whether it captures the key essence of the book; whether it encourages others to read the book; originality; and technical expertise.

Who judges my entry?

The top 20 entries and the final winners will be judged by a panel
of people that include Tristan Bancks, CQU representative and
a representative from Mackay Regional Council.
